Switzerland is Green
by Jeff Bonforte

Switzerland is green.
As I look now ten shades of green
Looking closer reveals ten more
Closer still another ten

The mountains in the distance are
White, like the people. They are
Proper and polite. It offends me.

Swiss houses and cows are brown.
I said "hello" to a cow
She chased me away.

Here man's things pass by me blue and red
And silver. Never green.

My Swiss wear ties to work
So I wear a tie. I am uncomfortable.
Mondays they dress casually
They are uncomfortable.

Switzerland is clean, so clean it looks new.
I walk in the hot sun admiring their clean
Walking around these clean streets, I am dirty.

At home thick doors are locked.
Bolts are strong and fasten twice.
The Swiss don't steal.

Things run to the minute
One more until my bus
A man checks his watch, a woman her phone
The minute has passed and again. Sigh.
As we board he remarks, "late."

Farms, streets, cows and children are all neat
No jaywalking, littering, no loudness
Everyone and everything its place
My sister was asked not to laugh at work

Traversing this beautiful land
People wear stern looks
Brows beat, eyes glare, mouths scowl
Thick moods.
There is no rule to smile in Switzerland.
